Dominican Republic: We stand in solidarity with Ana Belique and Michelle Ricardo, we reject the censorship and fascist threats during the International Book Fair of Santo Domingo

International Declaration

As a new symptom of the degradation of democratic rights in the Dominican Republic, the International Book Fair of Santo Domingo, which began on April 22, became the occasion for government censorship and the unpunished actions of fascist groups. Since the beginning of April, right-wing extremists acting under the denominations “Movimiento no tenemos miedo” and “Antigua Orden Dominicana” publicly threatened to sabotage the presentation of the bilingual children’s book “La muñeca de Dieula” (Dieula’s Doll), programmed within the framework of the Fair. It is a book written by human rights activist and founder of the Movimiento Reconocido, Ana Belique, dedicated to the defense of the rights of the Dominican population of Haitian descent.

The fascists publicly called for the burning of the stand where the book was to be presented. The authorities, instead of acting against incitement to hatred and violent threats, guaranteeing the security of the activity, decided to cancel the book presentation. The government applies the racist censorship demanded by the fascists, who held a small rally at the Fair. In this way the democratic rights of the Dominican people have been harmed.

On Saturday night, April 24, artist Michelle Ricardo, co-founder of the Anticanon publishing house and member of the Socialist Movement of Workers, used her intervention in a slam poetry session, within the framework of the same Fair, to show solidarity with Ana Belique. In response to this artistic intervention, Michelle Ricardo has also been the object of death threats and constant harassment by the same fascist organizations.

Impunity and the government’s collusion with the ultra-right evidently encourages it to intensify its attacks. We demand that the Attorney General’s Office act immediately in response to the grave report formally filed by Michelle Ricardo, as well as the public threats, the permanent harangues of racist hatred and the harassment against Ana Belique and other people linked to anti-racist, human rights and leftist activism. We call on writers and artists, leftist, trade union and human rights organizations internationally to reject the censorship by the Dominican government and to demand that it cease its complicity with fascist organizations, providing minimum security guarantees to writers, artists and human rights defenders in the Dominican Republic.
