Pope Benedict XVI said he is joyful about the upcoming beatification of his predecessor John Paul II. The former pope’s legacy includes leading fierce pro-imperialist campaigns in Nicaragua and Poland, unconditional support of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as well as the consolidation of legal mechanisms to protect pedophile priests.
Benedict XVI also collaborated in the cover up of several cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.
The reign of John Paul, the first polish pope; (1978-2005) is credited with being responsible for helping to restore capitalism in Eastern Europe at the end of the 1980s. Additionally, John Paul promoted the beatification and canonization of Jose María Escrivá Balaguer, a Nazi sympathizer, supporter of Spanish dictator [Francisco] Franco and founder of the Opus Dei.
